Cire Trudon is the world’s oldest and most revered candle manufacturer, renowned for its rich and royal narration, the strength of its legacy and its genuine commitment to quality, with nearly four centuries of expertise unrivalled in candle manufacturing, showcased through historic moments in French history.
Founded in 1643, the official Royal Manufacturer to Louis XIV, Louis XVI and Napoléon Bonaparte has surpassed several political and industrial revolutions during its time including the arrival of electricity, neither of which ever blighted the candle maker’s existence.
Revived in 2007 and taking the name ‘Cire Trudon’, the brand is a specialist in the creation of the finest perfumed candles in existence, enlisting renowned noses to design scents, each conveying a piece of the Cire Trudon and French history, capturing spaces and times reminiscent of strong feelings and powerful imagery.
Skilful and demanding, each candle is still dripped and crafted by hand, perpetuating a luxury manufacturing style which continues to draw talent from its masterful heritage and its founder and never ceasing to innovate.
Inspired by an in-depth history and fascinating traditions, the candle’s pure and all-natural formulations have transitioned from 100% beeswax to blended wax paste made of vegetable substances, forming a unique blend, miscible with any fragrance, to guarantee the best possible burn and olfactory experience.
Pourquoi naître esclave (Why born a slave) is the name given by sculptor and painter Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux (1827-1875) to a series of busts he created around 1870. At the heights of his career, enjoying the protection of Napoleon III, Carpeaux was commissioned by the city of Paris to design the Fontaine de l’Observatoire and slightly modified the theme imposed on him – the four cardinal points – by replacing them with allegoric characters personifying Europe, Africa, Asia and America. While he was working on the representation of Africa, he came up with the idea of the bust of the Négresse Captive. Obsessed with faithful representations of human movement, he sculpted his slave at an angle in order to express revolt. The story goes that the woman who posed for the bust might have also been the model of the “Capresse des colonies” by Charles Cordier in 1861.
